SB 167 passed in Ga Senate, dies in House

On Tuesday, Feb 25, 2013 the Georgia Senate passed SB 167 which, among other things, would have had the effect of (a) rejecting Georgia's continuation with the implementation of the CCGPS, (b) plunging our state educational agency into another de-stabilizing round of standards review and adoption and (c) prohibiting effective cooperation about educational standards and assessments at the interstate, regional, and national levels.

After a great number of GCTM members and others expressed their views with regard to this bill, the House Education Committee failed to pass it into law. The vote was 13-5 against.

Math Day at the Capitol

The Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCTM) hosted the first-ever "Math Day at the Capitol" on March 6th, 2014. The event was organized to promote the importance of mathematics education in Georgia and to highlight the connection between mathematically literate citizens and economic development.

During the event, GCTM hosted a breakfast for the state legislators in the State Capitol Building; GCTM award winners and student mathletes from the Georgia American Region Mathematics League (ARML) team were recognized; and a formal resolution was made in the Senate. (see pics...)

GCTM Partners with GCSM to Support CCGPS

GCTM and the Georgia Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (GCSM) have recently joined together to draft a letter to the Georgia legislature in support of the CCGPS. Read the letter here.

GMC 2013 at Rock Eagle

The 54th Annual Georgia Mathematics Conference was held October 16-18, 2013 at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center. This year, the focus of the conference was on equipping teachers with resources to develop lifelong learners in their classrooms, especially in consideration of all the transitions that are currently taking place in mathematics education (Common Core, Standards for Mathematical Practice, Teacher Keys, etc.).     Learn more...

Georgia Withdraws From PARCC

Georgia is withdrawing from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) test development consortium according to a July 22, 2013 press release from the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE). Learn more...

Sessions for GMC 2013

The 2013 GMC Program Committee is beginning to finalize the session schedule for the next Georgia Mathematics Conference, to be held in October, and whose theme will involve "Equipping LIfelong Learners". As such, any speakers interested in presenting a session at the 2013 GMC at Rock Eagle should immediately contact the Conference Coordinator (nickeyice@gmail.com) for possible inclusion in this year's program.

2013 Summer Mathematics Academies

This summer, GCTM and the Georgia Department of Education will be offering four 2-day math academies at locations across the state, aimed at helping teachers better integrate the CCGPS. With new sessions this year and material that specifically emphasizes assessment, these academies promise to be just as popular as last year's.
